Cedric Payne
Ser Cedric Payne, a knight from a minor house tied to the Lannisters, is remembered mainly for who he raised: he took Podrick Payne in after the boy's mother abandoned him, and kept him at his side as the war began sweeping through the realm.
His name survives mostly through that bond, the thread that explains how a squire ended up serving under Tywin Lannister's command.
Chapter 1
Podrick's guardian
Books only
When Podrick Payne's mother abandoned him, it was Ser Cedric who took the boy in. No further detail survives about the circumstances — not when it happened, not how old Pod was — only that from then on the boy was in his care.
That care lasted for years, until the war caught up with both of them: Ser Cedric brought Pod along when they joined the War of the Five Kings.
Chapter 2
Death in Tywin's camp
298 ACBooks only
The war caught up with him too. Ser Cedric died in 298 AC, during one of Lord Tywin Lannister's encampments in the Riverlands, as the Lannister army moved through the region.
It is the last thing known of him: nothing says exactly how he died, only that it happened in that camp, tied to the same war that had swept Podrick along as well.
