Sources and rights

Westeros, Essos and everything this atlas names are the creation of George R. R. Martin, published in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga and the world books, and of HBO in the series Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

This atlas is a fan work: free and not for profit. It is not associated with, sponsored by or approved by any of them, and it claims no rights over their work: the names, trade marks and images cited belong to their owners.

The drawing of the world on which everything else is placed — coastlines, rivers, relief — comes from Adam Whitehead’s “Atlas of Ice and Fire”, the reference cartography of this fandom. The other 129 houses in the catalogue have no published arms, and none are invented for them: they carry a medallion drawn by the atlas with their initial, and the entry states that it is our interpretation and nobody’s heraldry.

Only screen images are published. The wikis also host illustrations signed by artists and video-game renders: they were downloaded, catalogued with their authorship, and are NOT served. Whoever never appeared on screen carries the seal of their house instead.

Each one carries the file page it came from and the terms it is published under, and the entry’s caption states them. The licence is distinguished by scope: where the file declares its own, that is the one stated; where it does not, the one the publishing wiki declares — which is not the same claim and is not worded the same.

Illustrations signed by their artist are not published. Where the file name carries a © or the name of whoever drew it there is an identified, findable rights holder, and that is a different matter from a screen still: they are harvested, catalogued separately, and not served.

And the file name is not the only thing we look at. Some images carry the signature or watermark stamped onto the picture itself — a publisher’s ©, a visual-effects studio’s logo, the portfolio address of whoever drew it — and no automatic rule can catch those. They are found by looking at every published image, whole and enlarged, and the ones that turn up are removed from the site and from the list.

For every published image the atlas records which wiki page it came from, under which file name, under which licence, and the sha1 of the original that was downloaded. This is not a summary and you do not have to take this page’s word for it: for the coats of arms and the portraits they are two files you can open and read, and for the entry photographs the caption of each one states it, linking to the file’s own page on the wiki.
