Dongo
Dongo is one of the giants who join the army Mance Rayder gathers beyond the Wall to march south. He is remembered for the massive bow he wields and for his part in the assault on Castle Black, when the Night's Watch tries to hold the free folk back.
Chapter 1
The giant in Mance's camp
Show only
In the camp Mance Rayder sets up before moving on the Wall, Jon Snow watches Dongo building a tent out of mammoth bones, among the other giants marching with the wildlings.
Ygritte uses him to explain to Jon what giants are like: shy most of the time, but quick to turn furious. She tells him she once saw one of them crush a man into the ground, the way a hammer drives a nail. Dongo notices Jon watching him and answers with an angry growl.
Chapter 2
The Battle of Castle Black
301 ACShow only
Dongo arrives with the rest of Mance's army at the foot of the Wall and, together with Mag the Mighty, tries to force open the gate of the tunnel that runs through it. Before that he uses a massive bow to smash the defenses on top and cut down several Night's Watch brothers; one of his arrows strikes a brother, who falls to the other side and is left impaled in the middle of Castle Black.
Dongo and Mag fix hooks to the gates and tie them to a mammoth to pull them open. The black brothers answer by hurling barrels of burning tar, which kill the wildlings around them but not the giants or the mammoth. The animal panics and bolts, and Dongo runs after it until he is exposed to the defenders' bolts.
One of those bolts strikes Dongo in the back and kills him. Mag, enraged by his death, finally breaks through the gate and dies afterward fighting the black brothers inside the tunnel.
