Ray
Ray was a hardened veteran of the War of the Ninepenny Kings who found refuge in the faith of the Seven. Turned itinerant septon, he preached peace to a small band of followers along the roads of the Vale of Arryn.
His name became forever tied to Sandor Clegane, whom he found dying by the roadside and nursed back to health — an encounter that reshaped the Hound's path through the story.
Chapter 1
The veteran of the Ninepenny Kings

Before wearing a septon's robes, Ray had fought in the War of the Ninepenny Kings. His brothers Willam and Owen were levied for the same war, and out of those violent years grew the man who would later preach peace.
Ray told his followers how he had come to his faith, though he admitted having no certainties about the gods: he did not know whether the Seven, the Old Gods and R'hllor were different faces of the same force, content simply to believe something greater than mankind was out there.
Chapter 2
The finding in the Vale
Show only
In the Vale of Arryn, Ray found Sandor Clegane badly hurt by the roadside, his leg broken and his body covered in insects. As he was about to bury him, the Hound coughed, and Ray had him loaded onto a cart to be nursed back to health.
According to Ray, the Hound seemed to die a dozen times more while recovering, and yet he always pulled through. Ray insisted the reason was not hatred nor the toughness the Hound claimed for himself, but that the gods had a purpose for him. In time the Hound recovered enough to help Ray and his followers raise a small sept.
When three riders of the Brotherhood without Banners arrived asking for horses, gold or weapons, Ray told them the group had nothing to give. He also refused to let the Hound fight them, convinced that answering violence only spread it further.
Chapter 3
The slaughter at the sept
303 ACShow only
That same night, while the Hound had gone off to cut firewood, the camp was raided. All of Ray's followers were killed without resistance, and Ray himself was found hanging from the rafters of the unfinished sept.
It was the Hound who discovered his body upon returning, and who picked up an axe determined to avenge the slaughter.
