The ambush, sprung on the forces of Aegon II's Hand and Lord Commander, Criston Cole, cost the column dearly before the ruse was discovered.

Aegon II TargaryenDuring the Dance of the Dragons, the army loyal to Aegon II Targaryen, led by his Hand and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Criston Cole, marched through the Riverlands. As it passed near Crossed Elms, men disguised as corpses fell upon the column. The ruse, devised by Black Trombo, cost Cole's men twelve dead before the deception was uncovered.
Days later, a second ambush in the same region would claim Criston Cole's own life.
