Fist of the First Men

The Fist of the First Men is a hill beyond the Wall, by the Milkwater, crowned by the remains of a circular wall the First Men left there long before the events told here.
Its name became tied to the Night's Watch, who used it as a forward post to watch the wildlings' movements on the far side of the Wall.

The Fist of the First Men rises beyond the Wall, near the Milkwater river, surrounded by forest for miles. From its top the land can be seen for a long way, though the wind blows hard and the views north and west are as wide as they are exposed; to the east the ground offers somewhat less risk.
On the plateau crowning the hill stand the remains of a circular wall, built long ago by the First Men. At the foot of the rise runs a stream.
Chapter 2
The Great Ranging's camp

Jon SnowDuring the Great Ranging, the Night's Watch camped at the Fist of the First Men, hoping to halt the wildlings' advance there before they reached the Wall.
At the foot of the hill, Ghost found a black cloak buried, belonging to a sworn brother. Jon Snow dug it out and found dagger blades, spearheads, and several hundred obsidian arrowheads inside; beneath the obsidian lay an old war horn made from an aurochs horn, reinforced with bronze rings. The cloak, thick well-woven wool, was damp but not rotted — it could not have lain there long.
The camp was reinforced, filling the gaps in the circular wall with stakes and traps. Even so it wasn't enough: the Others attacked and defeated the Watch.
