Isle of Toads
la Isla de los Sapos
The Isle of Toads is one of the Basilisk Isles, off the northern coast of Sothoryos, known for an ancient stone idol left behind by a civilization far older than its present-day inhabitants.
It features in the story of Nymeria's exodus as the place where local corsairs offered the Rhoynar a home in exchange for a human tribute.
Chapter 1
The idol of black stone
Books only
The island still holds traces of a much older civilization, dated to the Dawn Age: a large idol of black, oily stone shaped like a toad.
Its current inhabitants appear to descend from whoever carved it — their faces are said to resemble those of fish, and webbed hands and feet are common among them.
Chapter 2
The price of a refuge
Books only
During Nymeria's long voyage, corsairs from the Basilisk Isles struck part of the ten-thousand-ship fleet and carried off many Rhoynar as slaves.
They then offered her a bargain: her people could settle on the island if every year they handed over thirty virgins and handsome youths to each of the local kings.
Nymeria turned the offer down and put her people back to sea, hoping to find refuge along the coast of Sothoryos.
What we are not sure about
PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
