The Tree of Crowns

Árbol de las Coronas

The Tree of Crowns is a spot in the Disputed Lands, across the narrow sea. Its place in history rests on a single gathering: under its branches a band of outlaws came together and shaped an alliance whose name would outlast the people who founded it.

Chapter 1

The pact beneath the tree

258 ACBooks only

In the year 258 AC, a mixed band of outlaws met beneath these branches: people with no flag of their own, wanted by the law of more than one realm, more used to boarding ships and raiding than to signing treaties. There, nine leaders who until then had owed each other nothing agreed to stop acting apart and take a common name, the Band of Nine.

That agreement, struck in the shade of the tree, would turn out to be the first step on a road that ended in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, a conflict that would see several realms cross the sea to face this same alliance.
