Vaith

The castle was raised by the Vaith themselves, a band of Andal adventurers who reached Dorne long before any unified kingdom existed there; they gave their name both to the stronghold and to the watercourse formed where two streams meet beneath its walls. Over the centuries a town grew up against the wall, so that today the name Vaith covers both the fortress and the huddle of houses at its feet.

When the War of Conquest brought the Targaryens into Dorne, Rhaenys Targaryen led an attempt to take the castle. What she found was open gates and empty halls: the Dornish fighters had gone elsewhere, leaving only old men, women, and children sheltering in the town. There was nothing to conquer, and Vaith joined the list of Dornish places that baffled the invaders by offering no resistance at all.

The First Dornish War began badly for the Targaryens. In the year 5 After the Conquest, Lord Harlen Tyrell marched out of Sotoinferno with his men toward Vaith, meaning to push on afterward to Lanza del Sol and force it into submission. The desert swallowed them, and nothing more was ever heard of them.

Four years later, in the year 9 AC, dragons ridden by Visenya and Aegon struck back: fire fell alike on Vaith, Asperón, and Sotoinferno.

Much later, a hedge knight named Duncan the Tall crossed the Prince's Pass on his way to Vaith, and lost his horse Chestnut somewhere in that desert crossing. With his squire Egg in tow, Duncan did reach the fortress, though there he managed to anger Lady Vaith.

Grown now, Princess Arianne wanted to reach Altojardín together with her cousin Tyene Arena, without anyone in Lanza del Sol finding out, hoping to meet Ser Willas Tyrell in person. The plan fell apart at Vaith: Prince Oberyn tracked them down there, and they had no choice but to turn back and return the way they had come.
