Alfred Broome

Alfred joined the Dragonstone garrison during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and by the time civil war broke out he was the oldest knight on the island. Those who knew him described a rough man with a sour temper.

When Rhaenyra Targaryen led the seizure of King's Landing, she had to decide who would hold Dragonstone in her absence. She chose Robert Quince as castellan and passed Alfred over despite his seniority.

Unknown to Rhaenyra, her half-brother Aegon had hidden on Dragonstone with his dragon Sunfyre. His supporters sought allies among the castle garrison, and Alfred offered his help in exchange for land, gold, and a lordship if the boy took the throne.

He took part in the coup that killed Robert Quince, whom he killed himself with a lance. Later, while Sunfyre fought young Moondancer overhead, he tried to kill Baela Targaryen; only Ser Marston Mares stopped him.

After the assault on the Dragonpit, Rhaenyra reached Dragonstone with the few men left to her, not knowing the island was no longer hers. Alfred was waiting with forty men, ready to escort her to the castle under a loyalty he no longer held.

On her arrival he had the Queensguard knights with her killed: Harrold Darke, Adrian Redfort, and Loreth Lansdale. It is said Alfred himself dragged her to Sunfyre, and his cloak caught fire as the dragon burned her. With that done, he urged the new king, Aegon II, to also kill his sister's son, Aegon the Younger, but the king chose to keep the boy alive as a hostage.

In late 130 AC, when Aegon II returned to King's Landing, Alfred was among his men. The Red Keep had fallen into the hands of Trystane Truefyre, one of the claimants who rose during the power vacuum, and it had to be taken back by force.

Once the castle was retaken, it was Alfred who beheaded the claimant with the sword Blackfyre.

Months later, with King's Landing besieged by Black forces, King Aegon ordered Alfred to cut off an ear from his nephew Aegon the Younger and send it to the besiegers as proof the boy was still his hostage.

He never carried it out. Crossing the drawbridge of Maegor's Holdfast, he ran into Ser Perkin and six of his men, who blocked his way and threw him into the moat. He spent two days writhing on the iron spikes before he died.
