Fall of Dragonstone

After the Fall of King's Landing, Aegon II did not cross the sea or seek shelter among his own: he hid on Dragonstone itself, Rhaenyra's island fortress. From there he wove his way back to the throne with men who were supposed to be his enemies.

He won over Ser Alfred Broome and Ser Marston Mares to open the gate from within, and brought Tom Tanglebeard and Tom Tanglebeard's...

The coup was not entirely quiet: before dawn, Lady Baela Targaryen rode out on Moondancer to meet him, and Aegon waited above on Sunfyre. The two dragons tore into each other in the sky over the castle.

The fight ended in the courtyard, both beasts crashing to the ground still tearing at one another. Aegon leapt from the saddle from twenty feet up; Baela had no such luck and went down with her dragon. Sunfyre finished Moondancer off.

Ser Marston stepped in so Alfred would not kill the girl as she crawled away, burned, from her dying dragon, and Tom Tangletongue carried her to the maester.

Aegon broke both legs in the fall, but when Gerardys offered him milk of the poppy for the pain, he refused it: he did not trust the maester not to poison him, and he already distrusted the drug after his recovery from the battle of Rook's Rest. Instead he had Gerardys fed to his dragon, though he kept part of the maester back to greet his sister with when she arrived.

With the castle now in Green hands, Robert Quince's charred body and Gerardys's torso were hung from the battlements by the gate. When Rhaenyra finally returned to Dragonstone, Alfred Broome's men seized her and her people almost before she could react.
