When the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Aegon II's supporters had him arrested and thrown into the dungeons of the Red Keep for backing Princess Rhaenyra's claim to the throne. He was offered a way out: swear loyalty to Aegon II, or die at the hands of the King's Justice.
Lord Merryweather chose to keep the word he had already given, and was executed. His head ended up mounted on a spike above the gates of King's Landing. His house, however, did not abandon Rhaenyra's cause and kept fighting for it for the rest of the war.
