Oswell Whent
Ser Oswell Whent was a knight of House Whent and a sworn brother of the Kingsguard under the reign of Aerys II Targaryen.
His name is tied to the inner circle around Prince Rhaegar in the years before Robert's Rebellion. His helm bore a black bat with wings spread, the emblem of his house, and he had a reputation for humor as dark as that wing.
Chapter 1
The tourney at Harrenhal
Books only
Barristan Selmy would later recall that the tourney at Harrenhal was called shortly after Ser Oswell visited his older brother, Lord Whent, lord of those ruins. Selmy noted the connection between the two events, though he never said what the brothers discussed.
It was at that same tourney that Jaime Lannister received the white cloak of the Kingsguard, with Ser Oswell among those present.
Chapter 2
The Tower of Joy

It was said that Rhaegar took Lyanna Stark from her betrothed by force, and that Ser Oswell, together with Ser Arthur Dayne, helped the prince do it. The three of them ended up guarding her in a remote tower, the one everyone would later call the Tower of Joy.
During the first month of Robert's Rebellion, Oswell stayed at the prince's side without leaving that place. When Ser Gerold Hightower arrived carrying Aerys's orders, Rhaegar rode for the capital and left his three white-cloaked brothers alone at the tower, with Lyanna still inside.
Chapter 3
The last fight on the ridge
283 ACBooks only
Eddard Stark arrived at the tower afterward with six companions. Years later, in feverish dreams, he would see himself standing before Oswell and the other two Kingsguard knights, telling them that King's Landing had fallen and that the Mad King no longer lived. The words weren't enough to stop the fight.
Only Howland Reed and Eddard himself walked away from that battle. Oswell died alongside his Lord Commander, Gerold Hightower, and alongside Arthur Dayne, his sworn brother in the white cloak. Eight cairns were later raised on the ridge, built from the stones of the tower itself, and Oswell's body was laid beneath one of them.
