The Crag

El Risco

The Crag is House Westerling's castle, built atop a cliff along the coast of the Westerlands. Little remains today of the stronghold it once was — its owners can no longer afford to keep it standing.

Its name enters the wider history of the realm when the War of the Five Kings brings the King in the North to its gates, and with him, the family that holds it.

Chapter 1

A crag above the sea

Books only

The First Men raised the castle in the Age of Heroes, atop the crag that gives it its name, with the sea breaking below. Little remains of that original structure: House Westerling no longer has the means to maintain a fortress of that size, and the place looks more like a ruin than a stronghold.

Chapter 4

The wounds and the wedding

Books only

In this chapterJon Umber

The assault follows soon after: Smalljon Umber and Black Walder Frey scale the walls while Robb forces the main gate. Robb comes out of the attack wounded, and the one who nurses him through his recovery is Jeyne Westerling, daughter of the house that now holds the castle.

Something more grows out of that care, and Robb, who prides himself on being a man of honor, marries her soon after. The marriage draws the Westerlings into the Stark cause — though the castellan who had governed the Crag before the assault, Ser Rolph Spicer, would go on to betray both his own house and the king who had made it his.
