House Amber ruled as kings in the North in the age before the Andals arrived, when the region was no single realm but a patchwork of rival kingdoms. Descended from the First Men, their place in history was defined by the rival they faced: House Stark.

Kings defeated by the Starks

The Ambers held the northern throne for generations, in a time when no single line could unite the region under one crown. Their reign passed much like that of the other First Men houses contesting the land before there was one lasting King in the North.
Their rivalry with the Starks ultimately sealed their fate: the lords of Winterfell defeated them in the war fought between the two houses, and with that defeat the Amber line came to an end. Of their reign nothing remains but the memory of having once been enemies of the Starks.
