Ib

Ib is the second largest island in the known world, rising out of the frozen waters of the Shivering Sea and giving its name to the Ibbenese people who live there.

Its wealth comes less from the gold and iron buried in its mountains than from whales: the oil and bone brought home by its whalers make this remote land one of the richest in the northern seas.

Chapter 1

The island of whale oil

Books only

On the island's southern coast stands Port of Ibben, the largest and richest city on the whole Shivering Sea, built on trade in whale fat, bone and oil. Ib Nor lies to the northeast, smaller and colder, while the Bay of Whales opens off the southern shore, scattered with small islands.

Inland, the mountains hold gold, iron and tin, and the forests yield timber, amber and the pelts of a hundred different animals. Most of the Ibbenese live on the island itself.

Chapter 2

The plague that arrived on a whaler

132 ACBooks only

On the Three Sisters it was said that the winter fever which swept through Westeros in 132 AC had first risen in Ib's dark forests, crossing the sea hidden in the hold of a whaling ship. No one can prove it, but the island has carried that reputation ever since — a distant, shadowed place from which unseen sicknesses might come.

Chapter 3

Giants, dragons and unicorns

Books only

The forests along Ib's coasts shelter bears, wolves and herds of mammoths roaming its plains and hills, and those who climb its highest mountains claim unicorns still live there. Once there was something larger still: giants and dragons once lived on the island, though both are now thought extinct.

The physical world

El oro, el hierro y el estaño son abundantes en las montañas de Ib, mientras que la madera, el ámbar y cientos de tipos de pieles se pueden encontrar en los bosques de la isla.
