Saltspear

Lanza de Sal

Saltspear is the narrow inlet where Blazewater Bay cuts into the western coast of the North, fed by the waters of the Fever River.

It is little more than a stretch of coastline, but more than one fleet has used it to reach the heart of the North without crossing the Neck by land.

Chapter 1

The Iron Fleet sails up the Saltspear

Books only

In this chapterBalon Greyjoy

When war breaks out over the Iron Throne, Balon Greyjoy sees the Saltspear as a back door into the North. He orders his brother Victarion to take the Iron Fleet through that channel and then up the Fever River, with Moat Cailin as the target.

The strait is little more than a tongue of sea linking Blazewater Bay to the interior, but it is enough to move warships. Through it the ironborn can slip in without risking open water or crossing watched land.

Chapter 2

The way back for the assembly

Books only

Later, Victarion leaves those northern waters and turns his prow back toward the Saltspear, this time sailing down toward the Iron Islands. There the kingsmoot awaits, the assembly that will decide who sits the Seastone Chair.
