The Disputed Lands are a stretch of territory south of Essos that no Free City manages to hold for long: Tyrosh, Myr and Lys have fought over it since the fall of Valyria, more than three centuries ago.
Its worth lies precisely in that no one controls it outright, so companies of sellswords from across Essos — and a few Westerosi knights besides — keep earning their pay by fighting for it again and again.

The ones who actually work the land are the free companies: they are hired again and again to fight over it, and Westerosi lords have marched among them too, among them Ser Jorah Mormont and Prince Oberyn Martell, the latter riding at the head of the Second Sons.
Chapter 2
The War of the Ninepenny Kings

Most of these wars amounted to little more than minor skirmishes, but one stood out from the rest: the War of the Ninepenny Kings, when the Band of Nine seized the Disputed Lands as the first step of a far more ambitious campaign.
The conquest did not last: as the Nine's momentum faded, the region slipped out of their grasp once again.
Chapter 3
Windblown against the Company of the Cat

In 299 AC the Disputed Lands became a battlefield once more, this time between the Windblown and the Company of the Cat.
The clash left the two companies with a rivalry that had not existed before that year.
