The Grey Waste

el Yermo Gris

The Grey Waste is a vast frozen expanse in eastern Essos, so immense that no one has ever measured where it ends. For generations it stood as the last frontier of the Great Empire of the Dawn, and today it separates the Golden Empire of Yi Ti from whatever comes out of its frozen sands.

Only a handful of travelers know what lies within it; K'Dath, on its southwestern edge, is the only city that dares to sit beside it.

Chapter 1

Border of the Dawn

Books only

South of Mossovy lies this cold land whose true size has never been fixed; accounts compare it to the Red Waste, though they claim it stretches beyond the edges any map admits to. The Cannibal Sands cover its western and southern reaches, and K'Dath, at its southwestern tip, is the only known settlement nearby.

For centuries it marked the eastern border of the Great Empire of the Dawn. Today the Five Forts stand watch along that border, built to hold back the raiders who come down from the waste toward the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.

Chapter 2

The Lord Who Never Had Her

49 ACBooks only

In this chapterJaehaerys I Targaryen

In 49 AC the young king Jaehaerys I Targaryen secretly married his sister Alysanne. When their mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon, found out, Alysanne told her that marrying her off to the King of Mossovy or the Lord of the Grey Waste would change nothing: her dragon would carry her straight back to her brother.

The physical world

La única ciudad conocida en las cercanías de la región, en el límite suroeste, es K'Dath.
