The Last River
el Último Río
The Last River is the waterway that separates Umber lands from the rest of the North, running from the northern mountains down to the Shivering Sea at the kingdom's farthest edge, much closer to the Wall than to Winterfell.
Last Hearth, seat of House Umber, stands on its banks, and crossing the river has more than once decided who could or could not bring an army to that house's door.
Chapter 1
The Umbers cross the river
Books only
Hother and Mors Umber bring their men across the river for the harvest feast at Winterfell, crossing the natural border that sets their lands apart from the rest of the North.
Later, when Theon Greyjoy's ironborn seize Winterfell, it is again from beyond that same river that the Umbers gather men to try to take it back.
Chapter 2
The warning that turns an army aside
Books only
When Stannis Baratheon weighs marching straight for Deepwood Motte, Jon Snow warns him that Mors Umber would tear his army apart if he tried to cross the Last River and the Lonely Hills.
Stannis listens and changes course: instead of that route, he turns his men west, toward Deepwood Motte.
What we are not sure about
PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
