The Long Lake

The Long Lake is a body of water in the north of Westeros, northeast of Winterfell, the source of the White Knife river.
Its shores hold remains of wars far older than the men who now remember them, and in the year 226 after the Conquest it was the site of the battle in which House Stark and House Umber defeated the army of Raymun Redbeard, the King-Beyond-the-Wall.

The lake lies northeast of Winterfell, with the Lonely Hills beyond it to the east; from its waters rises the White Knife, which flows on to empty into the Bite.
In a nearby barrow examined by Maester Kennet, obsidian arrowheads were found lodged between the ribs of giant skeletons — a sign that giants and the children of the forest fought each other long before anyone was counting years.
Watt, who would go on to wear the black of the Night's Watch, also came from its shores.
Chapter 2
The Battle of the Long Lake

In 226 AC the lake was a battlefield. Raymun Redbeard, who had proclaimed himself King-Beyond-the-Wall, marched south with his host, and there the combined forces of House Stark and House Umber met him.
The clash ended with the wildling army destroyed, broken by the alliance of the two northern houses.
