Upper Rhoyne
el Alto Rhoyne
The Upper Rhoyne is one of the two branches that, joining with the Little Rhoyne, give rise to the great Rhoyne river, the most important waterway of western Essos. It rises in Andalos and runs northeast, and its waters, littered with drifting logs, have a reputation for splitting apart any barge that dares them.
Much of its course lies within the domains of the city of Norvos, and in the past it marked the edge of one of the largest realms remembered in the region.
Chapter 1
A treacherous river
Books only
The Upper Rhoyne is one of the two currents that, joining with the Little Rhoyne, give rise to the great Rhoyne river. It rises in Andalos and runs northeast, and much of its course lies within the domains of Norvos.
Its waters are far from gentle: they are full of submerged and drifting logs capable of shattering a barge without warning, so navigating it demands knowing the river well.
Chapter 2
Qarlon the Great's border
Books only
Before the Valyrians imposed their dominion over Essos, Qarlon the Great ruled all the lands stretching between the Axe and the source of the Upper Rhoyne, an immense territory for a single lord.
That power did not last: he ended up facing the Valyrians and lost both his realm and his life in the struggle.
What we are not sure about
PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
