The Axe
el Hacha
The Axe is a peninsula on the northern coast of western Essos, jutting into the Shivering Sea, its jagged outline giving the place its name.
Tradition holds this land as the original home of the Andals, before they crossed into Westeros and left their mark across half a continent.
Chapter 1
A coastline shaped like an axe
Books only
The peninsula lies east of Lorath, north of the hills of Norvos, and northwest of the forest that surrounds Qohor. Its ragged silhouette against the Shivering Sea resembles the blade of an axe, and that shape gave the land its name.
The ground holds deposits of gold and amber, carried down by rivers into Dagger Lake, which is in turn fed by the waters of the Qhoyne.
Chapter 2
The cradle of the Andals
Books only
Tradition holds that the Axe was the first home of the Andals, before they migrated to the lands that would later be called Andalos. In time, some returned to this peninsula, driven back by pressure from the Valyrian Freehold.
The region also fell under the influence of Lorath at various points in its history, including during the years when Qarlon the Great extended his dominion.
What we are not sure about
PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
