Yunkai

Yunkai is one of the three great slaving cities of Slaver's Bay, walled in yellow mudbrick and ruled by the Wise Masters under the sign of a harpy holding a whip. Its wealth rests on the sale of slaves, above all those trained for the bedchamber.

The city enters the history of the world when Daenerys Targaryen, on her march toward the throne, crosses its path.

Chapter 1

The Yellow City

Books and show

Yunkai rises on the eastern shore of Slaver's Bay, ringed by yellow mudbrick walls and crowned with stepped pyramids. Its people call it the Yellow City and fly a harpy holding a whip and an iron collar, an emblem inherited from the old Ghiscari empire. Yaros lies to its west; to the north stretches a strip of land no one claims.

The Yunkish have amber skin and hair of tangled black and red, and speak a High Valyrian roughened by a heavy local accent. The Wise Masters who rule the city wrap themselves in the tokar, a garment that must be held with one hand and whose trim marks the wearer's rank, and wear their hair sculpted into wings or horns.

Yunkai's wealth comes from its slave markets, prized above all for those trained for the bedchamber; its eunuchs, unlike those cut elsewhere, lose only their testicles. When the city needs soldiers it arms five thousand slaves, for it keeps no other army.

In this chapterDaenerys Targaryen

Daenerys Targaryen marches on the yellow walls and takes the city by force at the Battle of Yunkai. The mercenary companies the Wise Masters had hired to defend it change sides and swell her ranks instead.

With the city surrendered, Daenerys does not linger; she leaves it beaten but standing and turns her army toward Meereen.

Chapter 3

The siege of Astapor

Books only

No sooner has Daenerys ridden off than Yunkai rearms. It hires the Long Lances, the Windblown and the Company of the Cat, and sends envoys to Volantis, Qarth and other free cities to spread lies about the queen they just lost, working to unravel her name.

With those sellswords it declares war on Astapor, the other city Daenerys left in unsteady hands, and lays siege to it: burning its crops and slaughtering its herds until the starving city is reduced to eating cats, rats and boiled leather.

When the Yunkish finally break through, they seal the broken gates to trap the dead and dying inside. They resupply from the plunder and march on toward Meereen, where the next battle awaits.
