Eddison Tollett

Eddison Tollett, better known as Dolorous Edd, is a steward of the Night's Watch, the order that guards the Wall. He joined its ranks after a recruitment built on half-truths, and has since served as personal steward to more than one Lord Commander.

He is no swordsman. What he is known for is delivering the gloomiest possible line at the worst possible moment, a habit that on the Wall has become something close to a comfort.

Chapter 1

A recruitment with a catch

Eddison claims descent from House Tollett, a noble house so minor it barely registers in the Vale of Arryn, and says he was raised poorer than any smallfolk.

He was brought into the Watch by Yoren, who sold him the black by promising no woman could resist a man in uniform, and left out the vow of celibacy that came with it.

One story survives from his early years on the Wall: he and other brothers found one of their own drowned inside a wine cask, and to steady their nerves they drank the wine.

Chapter 2

The Fist, Craster's, and the defence of the Wall

In this chapterJeor MormontJon Snow

Edd takes part in the Great Ranging that Lord Commander Jeor Mormont leads beyond the Wall. When Jon Snow splits off from the group, he becomes his squire, and in that role survives the attack of the Others at the Fist of the First Men.

The survivors take shelter at Craster's Keep, where a mutiny breaks out against Mormont and leaves the Lord Commander dead. Edd flees toward the Wall with Grenn, Giant, and the other loyal men.

The group reaches Castle Black after fighting their way across the Bridge of Skulls.

When the wildlings attack Castle Black, the defenders name one of the straw sentries after him.

In the election for the new Lord Commander, Edd draws a handful of votes that end up going to Jon Snow.

Chapter 3

Steward to the new Lord Commander

In this chapterSamwell Tarly

When Samwell Tarly leaves Castle Black, it is Edd who sees him off.

With Jon Snow now Lord Commander, Edd becomes his steward, and Jon later names him steward-in-chief of Túmulo Largo, the castle where he sends the spearwives under the command of Iron Emmett.

At one point Edd returns to Castle Black with six wagons, tasked with bringing more spearwives to Fuerte Túmulo.

Chapter 4

A pessimist's temperament

He is described as a very thin man with grey hair and a sour look, known for never expecting anything good from life.

He sums up that reputation better than anyone: "I never wanted to see half the things I've seen, and I never saw half the things I wanted to see." When Cotter Pyke swears they will defend the Wall to the last man, Edd notes, resignedly, that the last man will probably be him.

Chapter 5

Two endings

Show only

The novels and the television adaptation part ways over Edd's fate. In the books, the last word on him leaves him alive, serving as steward-in-chief at Túmulo Largo.

The Atlas catalogue records the other ending: in the television series, Eddison Tollett dies in the year 305 After the Conquest, a fate the novels have not given him.
