Grey Worm commands the Unsullied who serve Daenerys Targaryen, the army of freed slaves she bought in Astapor. A former slave himself, chosen by his own comrades to lead them, he became one of the few men whose counsel the queen trusts without reservation.
Chapter 1
The name that brings luck

Daenerys TargaryenWhen the Unsullied debate who should lead them, it is the soldiers themselves who point to Grey Worm as the most capable, and Daenerys places him under Jorah Mormont to learn to command. She also does away with the custom of giving the Unsullied a new name each dawn; offered the chance to pick another, Grey Worm chooses to keep the one he carried on the day he stopped being a slave.
In the councils held before the siege of Meereen, Daario Naharis proposes that the Unsullied hack down the gates with axes, certain that boiling oil would feel like no more than a warm bath to them. Grey Worm disagrees: the oil may not burn the Unsullied the way it burns other men, but it still blinds and kills. He asks instead for battering rams, with which his men would break the gate or die trying. Daenerys tells him not to waste those lives, and when a plan is later raised to take the city through its sewers, she decides the Unsullied are not suited to that approach.
Chapter 2
The patrols of Meereen
Barristan SelmyWhen the Sons of the Harpy start killing the queen's soldiers in the streets of Meereen, Daenerys orders Grey Worm to have his men patrol in pairs. The order comes shortly before the queen herself vanishes on Drogon's back, leaving the city without her.
Hizdahr zo Loraq tries to seize command of the Unsullied in her absence, but Grey Worm and his soldiers refuse to obey him. When Ser Barristan Selmy comes to ask for his help in taking control of the queen's council instead, Grey Worm agrees to back him.
