Jasper Wylde

Under Viserys I, Jasper held a seat on the Small Council as Councillor of Edicts. On the night in 129 AC when the king died, the council met to settle the succession to the Iron Throne, and Jasper spoke in favor of Prince Aegon over his half-sister Rhaenyra.

He backed his position with two precedents: the Great Council of 101 AC and King Jaehaerys I's choice to name his son Baelon heir ahead of Princess Rhaenys. To that he added Andal custom, which places a son's claim above a daughter's. When Grand Maester Orwyle asked what should be done with those unwilling to bend the knee to Aegon, Jasper answered that they should be treated as traitors and put to a traitor's death.

With Aemond Targaryen acting as Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm, the prince summoned his vassals and councillors to announce he would march against his uncle and crush the uprisings among the river lords. Jasper objected: he urged waiting for Lord Hightower's forces and Prince Daeron to arrive, since only then would the campaign have two dragons behind it.

Aemond ignored him and set out regardless. His absence left the capital without the defense Jasper had asked for.

Aemond's departure left the city exposed, and in 130 AC Rhaenyra's supporters took it. Queen Alicent realized resistance was pointless and left Maegor's Holdfast along with her father, Ser Tyland Lannister, and Jasper.

Queen Rhaenyra charged him with treason and had him executed. To the end he held to the same claim he had made in council: that the Iron Throne belongs to a son before a daughter.

The nickname has two explanations. Septon Eustace traces it to the respect his rigidity in legal matters commanded. The fool Mushroom instead calls it a jibe about a different kind of firmness: Jasper fathered twenty-nine children by four wives, the last of whom died worn out.
