The Great Council of 101 was the assembly King Jaehaerys I summoned at Harrenhal to settle, once again, who would inherit the Iron Throne after the death of his son Baelon.
The council named Viserys Targaryen heir, setting a precedent that would echo for generations: the throne does not pass to a woman, nor to a woman's son.

Jaehaerys I TargaryenPrince Baelon's death left the succession open, and Jaehaerys I chose not to decide it alone. He gathered the great lords of the realm at Harrenhal to vote on the next heir.
The choice fell on Viserys Targaryen, Baelon's own son, who became Prince of Dragonstone. The other claimant by blood, Rhaenys Targaryen, was passed over: the council ruled that a woman, or a woman's son, would not inherit the throne.
