Lewyn Martell

Before he ever wore a white cloak, Lewyn was the younger brother of the woman who ruled Dorne. King Aerys II chose him for the seven knights of his Kingsguard, an order that demanded he give up lands, titles, and any hope of a wife or children.

The vow did not stop him from keeping a lover in secret. Ser Barristan Selmy and his other white-cloaked brothers knew of the affair and, out of loyalty to Lewyn himself, kept it quiet.

When Robert Baratheon rose in rebellion, Aerys kept Lewyn's niece at court as a guarantee that Dorne would not turn against him. He ordered Lewyn to gather ten thousand Dornish spears and march them to join the forces Prince Rhaegar Targaryen was raising against the rebels.

Lewyn obeyed and rode out at the head of his men, leaving behind a land the king held hostage to his own obedience.

At the Trident, Lewyn was already gravely wounded by the time Ser Lyn Corbray sought him out for the single combat that would end his life. By the time their swords crossed, the wound had already doomed him.

He died on the same field where the war itself was decided, among the forces Rhaegar had gathered to hold back Robert.

After the war ended, Jon Arryn, the new Hand of King Robert I Baratheon, arranged for Lewyn's bones to be returned to Dorne, where they are said to remain to this day.

Arianne Martell, Doran's daughter, remembered him as a man of great height, tall as a tower in her own words.

"My uncle always said that what determines a man's worth is the sword in his hand, not the one between his legs." — a saying of his that she kept.
