Malakho
Malakho is an aging Dothraki warrior who serves in Khal Drogo's khalasar. When Ko Pono and Ko Jhaqo abandon the group after Drogo's fall, Malakho stays behind, and ends up pledging loyalty to Daenerys Targaryen once she hatches her three dragon eggs.
That loyalty carries him all the way to Qarth, where he watches over the khaleesi in a city that isn't always kind to her.
Chapter 1
The rider who stays
Show only
Malakho is one of Khal Drogo's Dothraki warriors, already an old man by the time we meet him. His place in the story takes shape once the khalasar is left without a leader: after Drogo's fall and death, two of his ko, Pono and Jhaqo, break away and lead their own riders elsewhere. Malakho doesn't go with them.
When Daenerys Targaryen hatches her three dragon eggs and rises as the new khaleesi, Malakho pledges himself to her. That choice shapes everything we know about him afterward: he becomes one of her protectors.
Chapter 2
The gates of Qarth
Show only
Malakho rides with Daenerys's diminished khalasar across the Red Waste; he can be spotted in the background when her silver horse drops dead from sheer exhaustion in those sands. He stays with her when the Thirteen of Qarth open their gates to receive her, and he's present at the reception Xaro Xhoan Daxos throws in her honor at his own house.
There, he and Kovarro have to be stopped from making off with Xaro's statues. Later he guards Daenerys on her way back from a meeting with the Spice King, and he's with her when she finds out her dragons are gone. After the theft, he stands watch outside her chamber door.
Chapter 3
The empty vault
Show only
Once Xaro Xhoan Daxos's treachery comes to light, it's Malakho who forces him into his own vault — the one he'd boasted held a fortune, and which turns out to be empty.
