Michael Manwoody

Ser Michael Manwoody was a knight educated at the Citadel who won the trust of King Daeron II Targaryen and came to act as his envoy to the Iron Bank of Braavos.

He was the third husband of Princess Elaena Targaryen, who would confess years later that it had not been his cleverness that made her love him, but the music he knew how to play.

Chapter 1

The envoy to the Iron Bank

Books only

In his youth Michael had studied at the Citadel, and from those years he carried a reputation as a clever, learned man. After King Daeron II's marriage to Myriah Martell, he became one of the crown's trusted men.

The king sent him to Braavos on several occasions to negotiate with the Iron Bank. Letters survive from those missions, exchanged between Michael and the Keyholders of the Bank.

Chapter 2

The harp instead of the sword

Books only

Shortly after the death of Princess Elaena Targaryen's second husband, she married Michael, apparently with Daeron II's own blessing.

In her later years, Elaena said it had not been Michael's intelligence that made her love him, but his love of music: Ser Michael would play the harp for her. When he died, Elaena ordered that his effigy be carved with a harp instead of the sword and spurs usually given to a knight.
