Missandei

Missandei was born in Naath alongside several siblings. Raiders from the Basilisk Isles captured them and sold them as slaves in Astapor. Three of the boys went through training as Unsullied; one did not survive it, and only Marselen and Mossador came out of it alive. It was Mossador who taught her to climb trees.

Missandei had a gift for picking up languages, so the Good Masters chose to train her as a scribe.

When Daenerys Targaryen arrives in Astapor to inspect the Unsullied, Missandei translates for her owner, Kraznys mo Nakloz. Once the bargain that hands Daenerys the army is closed, Kraznys hands the girl over as well, so she can bridge the gap with the soldiers until they learn their new queen's tongue.

In time, Missandei takes on the role of Daenerys's herald. The queen offers more than once to send her home to Naath, but the girl chooses to stay at her side. She explains it plainly: "I would rather stay with you. In Naath I would live in fear that the slavers might come back. When I'm with you, I feel safe."

The killing of her brother Mossador at the hands of the Sons of the Harpy leaves her devastated. Ser Barristan Selmy, who sees her up close in those days, admires her courage and says her judgment runs ahead of her years.

When Daenerys vanishes flying on Drogon's back and the Dothraki ride out into the Dothraki Sea to find her, it is Missandei who stays behind with Ser Barristan, helping him hold together the court of Meereen.

She is around eleven years old, with dark skin, a round face and golden eyes. Young as she is, she is willful and sharp, known for a firm voice and a sweet temper.

She speaks two languages with ease — the High Valyrian of Astapor and the Common Tongue of the Seven Kingdoms — and gets by in Ghiscari.
