Ghiscar

Ghiscar is the stretch of land facing the Bay of Grief on the eastern coast of Essos, and it lends its name to an empire that no longer stands. Before Valyria rose to power, this was the corner of the world ruled from a city called Old Ghis.

Chapter 1

The empire that stood up to Valyria

Books only

On this stretch of the eastern coast stood Old Ghis, the seat of an empire that for generations was the one power able to contest ground with Valyria. Nothing of that dominion remains standing today — neither the capital nor the empire around it survived the clash with the Valyrian dragons.

Only one city still carries the name and something of the bloodline: New Ghis, built on an island south of Ghaen, stands where its predecessor no longer does.

Chapter 2

Daughters of the harpy

Books only

The trace of the old empire is not only read in ruins: it survives in three slaving cities that claim descent from it. Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen carry the harpy of Ghis on their emblems, a mark tying them to a past none of them actually lived through.
