House Tarbeck of Tarbeck Hall

Casa Tarbeck de Torre Tarbeck

House Tarbeck of Tarbeck Hall was a westerlands line sworn to the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, its banner a gyronny star in silver and blue.

The family had drifted into decline over the generations until Lady Ellyn Reyne's marriage to Lord Walderan Tarbeck lifted it back up, making the Tarbecks, alongside the Reynes, one of the sturdiest props under Casterly Rock's rule.

Chapter 1

The match that restored the fortune

Books only

The Tarbecks were an old line, the kind time had quietly emptied of coin. Their fortunes turned when Lord Walderan Tarbeck married Ellyn Reyne: overnight, alongside the bride's own house, they became counted among the most weighty vassals serving Casterly Rock.

Ser Eustace Osgrey would later recall it was not the first time a woman of his house had married into the Tarbecks; the two families had old ties.

When the Blackfyre Rebellion broke out, the house did not settle on one side — Tarbecks fought under both banners.

Lady Ellyn's hostages

In this chapterTywin Lannister

With Tytos Lannister as lord of Casterly Rock, Lord Walderan Tarbeck was locked up for his crimes. His wife did not sit still: she took three Lannisters hostage, Stafford Lannister among them, and warned Lord Tytos that if any harm came to her husband, the prisoners would answer for it.

Tywin Lannister, then the heir, urged his father to send Tarbeck back in three pieces. Tytos ignored him and chose the exchange instead, freeing Walderan for his own kin.

Some sort of peace must have followed, since the Tarbecks' rebellion against the Lannisters did not come until years afterward.

Chapter 3

The extermination

261 ACBooks only

When the Reynes and the Tarbecks rose together against the Lannisters, Tywin Lannister marched Casterly Rock's forces on Castamere, the Reyne seat. The campaign, by all accounts, was fought with as much brilliance as ruthlessness.

Both houses' seats were razed and their members put to the sword without exception.

One none-too-reliable source claims that two daughters of Lord Walderan and Lady Ellyn survived the slaughter, only for Tywin to force them into the Silent Sisters.
