Tarbeck Hall

Torre Tarbeck

Tarbeck Hall was the seat of House Tarbeck, a castle raised in the Westerlands not far from Casterly Rock and Castamere. Today only ruins remain, and what happened there explains why: it was one of the settings of the Reyne-Tarbeck rebellion against House Lannister.

Before that rebellion, the stronghold enjoyed a period of splendor thanks to its lord's marriage to a daughter of House Reyne, and before that it was visited by a Targaryen king during one of his progresses through the realm.

Lady Ellyn's rebuilding

In this chapterAegon V Targaryen

By the time Aegon V Targaryen sat the Iron Throne, Tarbeck Hall was little more than a heap of crumbling stone.

The castle's fortunes turned with the marriage of Lord Walderan Tarbeck to Lady Ellyn Reyne. Ellyn poured into its rebuilding the gold her brother had pulled, without leave, from Lord Tytos Lannister's coffers, raising the outer walls anew, strengthening the towers, and furnishing the halls until the castle rivaled any other stronghold in the west.

Chapter 3

The price of rebellion

Books only

In this chapterTywin Lannister

When the Tarbecks and the Reynes rose against the Lannisters, Ser Tywin Lannister answered by killing Lord Walderan and marching on Tarbeck Hall with his head and those of his sons mounted on pikes.

Lady Ellyn readied the castle to withstand a siege, but the next day a stone hurled against the wall brought down the keep's oldest tower, and she and her son died beneath the rubble. Soon after, those who remained surrendered what was left of Tarbeck Hall.

Ser Tywin then had the ruins put to the torch. It is said to have been one of the few times he was ever seen to smile in front of others.
