Battle of Acorn Hall

Acorn Hall was the site of a clash between the riverlords loyal to Prince Daemon Targaryen and the westermen army marching in the name of Prince Regent Aemond, in the middle of the Dance of the Dragons. The fight did not decide the war, but it marked the moment the defenders of the Riverlands lost their last chance to stop the advance on Harrenhal.
It is remembered chiefly for the death of Lord Petyr Piper, one of the riverlords who had stood against the greens, and for leaving the road open to an army that had already paid in blood for every mile of its march.

Daemon TargaryenBy order of Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen, Lord Jason Lannister led the westermen host across the Riverlands toward Harrenhal, then held by Prince Daemon. The passage came at a price: after prevailing at the Red Fork, Lannister did not survive the fighting, and command of the army fell to Ser Adrian Tarbeck.

Lord Petyr Piper, having fallen back after the Red Fork, was joined by Lord Joseth Smallwood near Acorn Hall, Smallwood's own seat. Together they held the westermen army for a time, but Piper died in the fighting; it was said his heart burst at the sight of his favorite grandson's head on a spike.
With Piper dead, Smallwood chose to withdraw to his castle, leaving the road open to the greens.

Three days later

Barely three days later, the Lannister host clashed again with the riverlords, this time gathered under Ser Harry Penny. The hedge knight managed to kill Ser Adrian Tarbeck before falling himself, and command of the westermen army passed to the aged Ser Humfrey Lefford.
