House Thenn is the youngest noble house of the North, born in 300 AC from an unusual marriage between a free folk chieftain and a Karstark noblewoman.
Its existence joins, for the first time, the people from beyond the Wall with the nobility of the Seven Kingdoms, and leaves open the possibility that its descendants might one day inherit a lordship of the North.

The wedding that founded a house

Alys KarstarkJon Snow, already Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, had known Alys Karstark since she was a child, and decides to protect her when her cousin Cregan Karstark, already twice widowed, seeks to force her into marriage to seize Karhold. Alys is heir to her brother Harrion, the castle's rightful lord, held prisoner at Maidenpool, and Cregan's branch of the family is working to claim the title by arranging his death. To spare Alys that marriage, Jon arranges another one: to Sigorn, the Magnar of Thenn, one of the free folk's chieftains.
The ceremony takes place at Castle Black and is officiated by Melisandre, the red priestess, while the Night's Watch stewards improvise the new house's arms on the spot for Alys's bridal cloak. That union gives birth to House Thenn, and should Harrion die without children, its heirs could become the new lords of Karhold.

Bronze beneath red flames

The new house's coat of arms is inspired by that of the Karstarks, but ringed with gules flames in honor of the red god, a reminder that Melisandre married its founders. Its men, some two hundred free folk warriors from Thenn, stand apart from the rest of their people because they go armed and armored in bronze rather than bone, hide, or stolen iron.
