Cenizas
Ash is the river that cuts through the Shadow Lands before losing itself in the Jade Sea and the Saffron Strait, shaping the darkest region of Essos.
Asshai sits at its mouth, and further upriver, where two tributaries meet, lie the ruins of Stygai — two places that only make sense through the course that joins them.
Chapter 1
The course through the Shadow

For much of its length the river runs through a valley so narrow that the water sits almost permanently in shadow, except for a brief stretch at midday when light reaches the bottom.
Asshai stands on both banks of its mouth, where the river meets the Jade Sea and the Saffron Strait. Further upstream, in its middle course, where two of its tributaries join, lie the ruins of Stygai.
Chapter 2
Black by day, green by night
Books only
By day the water is black. By night it glows with a pale green phosphorescence. The fish that live in it are blind and deformed, which is why food and fresh water have to be brought into Asshai from outside.
On the Miasmas of Harmon claims that animals are more sensitive than people to the river's contamination, which would explain why so few are seen in the area.
