Breakwater is the seat of House Borrell on the island of Sweetsister, built from stone straight onto the rocks of the shore. It is reached across a black basalt bridge and a rusted portcullis, over a saltwater moat spanned by a drawbridge hung from two massive chains.
Inside, a hall with thick walls and twenty iron sconces serves its lords as an audience chamber, while the stone dungeons flood whenever the tide rises. That hall is the setting for one of the episodes that has given the castle its place in the history of the Seven Kingdoms.

The captive before Ser Godric

Davos SeaworthSer Davos Seaworth is brought to Breakwater as a prisoner, captured on the Whale's Womb and taken before Ser Godric in the great stone hall. Outside it is raining; the churning green water roaring beneath the arches beats against the foundations and swirls into the dungeons.
Wrists bound, he stumbles across the mud-churned yard and up the steps into the building. Of the twenty iron sconces only four hold torches, and none is lit; the only light comes from two tall tallow candles. The captain guarding him hangs his own cloak on a nail to keep from dripping on the ragged Myrish carpet, and Davos, clumsy with his bound hands, barely manages to unfasten his own to do the same.
What awaits him is the chance of ending up in the castle's dungeons, chained to the wet stone floor, where a rising tide could drown him.
