Gates of the Moon

las Puertas de la Luna

The Gates of the Moon stands at the foot of the Giant's Lance, guarding the approach to the Eyrie above. Larger than the castle it watches over, with a moat, drawbridge and square towers, it served the Arryns for generations as a winter refuge from the heights.

Chapter 1

A castle bigger than the one it guards

Books only

The stronghold was raised by House Arryn back when they still bore the title Kings of Mountain and Vale, before the Targaryens ever crossed the narrow sea.

Each winter, when the Eyrie grew cut off by snow, the lords of the Vale would come down and settle here, climbing back up once spring returned.

Chapter 2

The prisoner who passed through these gates

Books only

Catelyn Tully stopped here on her way to the Eyrie, with her uncle Brynden Tully at her side and Tyrion Lannister held prisoner.

From these gates only the last climb up the Giant's Lance remained.

Chapter 3

The holding Baelish gave away

Books only

In this chapterPetyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish granted the stronghold to House Royce of the Gates of the Moon in perpetuity, making it their seat and the base of their power.
