Isle of Faces

During the years of war between the Children of the Forest and the First Men, it's said the Hammer of the Waters that broke the Arm of Dorne may have been set off from this island. When that struggle finally burned out after centuries, it was on this same island that both peoples signed the accord ending their conflict: every weirwood on the island was then given a carved face, so the Old Gods could witness the oath.

The signing gave rise to the order of the Green Men, tasked with protecting the last weirwoods left in the south. The Andals never managed to bring them to heel, and some maesters have gone as far as to suggest the Children of the Forest survived there even after the invasion.

The island has been held sacred for centuries, so outsiders don't set foot on it: there is, in fact, no proof the order of the Green Men still existed after the Andal Invasions. Every so often some reckless young riverlord tries to row out to it, and is always chased off by a sudden windstorm or a flock of crows.

Meera Reed tells Bran Stark a story about a young crannogman who spends some time on the island before setting off for a tourney. As she tells it, that story is the one about the knight of the laughing tree, and it takes place in what's remembered as the year of the false spring.

During the Dance of the Dragons, it was said that Addam Velaryon landed his dragon on the island and spoke there with the Green Men.
