Oakenshield

Oakenshield is, in truth, two unrelated places that happen to share a name. One is among the Shield Islands, the chain that guards the coast of the Reach west of Highgarden, and it serves as the seat of House Hewett. The other is an empty Night's Watch stronghold on the Wall, sitting just west of Castle Black.
No one has explained whether the two places are connected in any way or whether the name was simply reused by chance on opposite sides of the map. The island, at least, has sent men and ships into the history of the Reach more than once.

Oakenshield is one of the Shield Islands, that string of small lands facing the sea just west of Highgarden. It is the seat of House Hewett, and on maps of the Reach the island and the family end up meaning almost the same thing.

Ships against Dalton Greyjoy

Alyn VelaryonIn 134 AC the galleys of the Shield Islands joined the fleet raised by Lord Alyn Velaryon to sail against the Iron Islands and put a stop to Lord Dalton Greyjoy's raiding. Six of those ships sailed out of Oakenshield.

The island falls to the ironborn

During the battle of the Shield Islands, the ironborn take Oakenshield. The old Hewett seat passes into the hands of Nute the Barber.

The empty castle on the Wall
Books only
Far from the Shield Islands stands another Oakenshield: an abandoned Night's Watch castle just west of Castle Black. Nothing on record says whether the two names share a history or are simply a coincidence.
