Battle of the Shield Islands

Freshly crowned King of the Iron Islands, Euron swears to give his people back the power they once held, and opens his campaign by striking at the Reach, whose armies are away fighting other wars.

He sends Torwold Blacktooth and the Red Oarsman up the Mander with a dozen fast longships as bait, while the bulk of the Iron Fleet waits out of sight on open water. The Shield Islands' defenders take the lure and sail out with what little they have left, barely a dozen ships of their own.

Ser Talbert Serry, heir to his house, falls in the clash. The ironborn lose six longships, but sink or capture thirty-eight of the enemy's.

With the Shield fleet broken, Euron's men land on the four islands and crush what resistance is left. Lord Humfrey Hewett is taken prisoner along with his family.

At Grimston, Ser Harras Harlaw plants his banner beneath the castle walls and dares any man to face him; he kills all but two, who yield, and once the seventh falls the castle's septon reads it as the gods' judgment and opens the gates.

Euron hands the four lordships to men of his own: Nute the Barber gets Oakenshield, Andrik the Unsmiling gets Southshield, Maron Volmark gets Greenshield, and Harras Harlaw himself gets Greyshield. Those sworn to Highgarden who escape the slaughter on the islands or along the Mander fall back to wait for reinforcements.

Women and children left without husband or father after the killing are sold into slavery by the ironborn. Word reaching King's Landing says Lord Chester and Lord Hewett are dead, Lord Grimm is held captive in his own castle, and Lord Serry has fled to Highgarden with what remains of his fleet.
