The Lands of Always Winter make up the northernmost edge of Westeros, far beyond the Wall, and no map places them with any certainty: it is unexplored ground, buried under a cold that never lifts.
Northern tradition names them as the birthplace of the Others, the threat that gives the Night's Watch and the Wall their purpose.
Chapter 1
The first inhabitants

Maester Yandel places the first inhabitants of this ground in the Dawn Age: the children of the forest and the giants made their home here.
Later, in the Age of Heroes, when the First Men sealed the Pact and Westeros split into small kingdoms, the chronicles use this land as a marker — those early kingdoms are said to have stretched from here all the way to the Summer Sea.

The birthplace of the Others

Northern legend holds that the Others came from this nameless cold, on the night the Long Night fell over the world.

Bran's vision

While comatose after his fall, Bran Stark has a vision: a place far north of the Wall, sunk in the distance. Looking so deep into the heart of winter leaves him terrified, and some have read it as a hint at these lands, though the text never names them.
