The Shivering Sea

el mar Tembloroso

The Shivering Sea is the icy expanse of water that opens north of Essos and northeast of Westeros, far beyond the charted coasts. Its waters lap the frozen lands west of the Wall and vanish eastward into a world no one has fully mapped.

At the edge of the known world

To the southwest, the Shivering Sea meets the Narrow Sea, and to the west it touches the shores of the lands beyond the Wall, where Skagos and Skane rise among its cold waters. To the north lie the frozen wastes of the White Waste, and eastward the sea continues past anything Westeros has ever charted.

Further east, well past any familiar coastline, lie the Thousand Islands. Some less reliable sources speak of waters full of whales, though no one can vouch for that.
