Roger Ryswell is a cousin of Lord Rodrik Ryswell, head of House Ryswell, one of the noble houses of the North. He has a reputation as a brawler.

That temper follows him through the war that reshapes the North, when his house throws in with the Boltons.

When Ramsay Bolton's army camps at Moat Cailin, Theon Greyjoy sees a column of riders arrive led by a Ryswell, unable to tell whether it is Roger or his cousin Rickard.

Roger attends, along with the rest of his house, the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to the girl presented as Arya Stark. Days later, when Theon Greyjoy is questioned about the murders that have taken place at Winterfell, Roger is present alongside a cousin of his, Roose Bolton, and Aenys Frey.
