House Ryswell of the Rills
Casa Ryswell de Los Riachuelos
House Ryswell of the Rills is a noble house of the North, sworn to House Bolton, seated at the Rills. Its arms show a black horse's head, eyed and maned red, on a bronze field.
Its men are called up in the North's major musters, from the levy that backs Robb Stark to the later campaigns fought under the Bolton banner.
Chapter 1
The seventy-nine sentinels
Books only
An old tale from the Nightfort tells of a Lord Ryswell's youngest son who left his post at the Wall and tried to hide in his father's castle. The black brothers caught him and brought him back among the other captured deserters.
The Lord Commander of the day had holes cut into the top of the Wall and had the runaways sealed inside, alive in the ice. They have been remembered since as the seventy-nine sentinels.
When Lord Ryswell himself grew old, he asked to be carried to the Nightfort to take the black and stay by his son. He could not spare him the punishment, but he chose to spend his last days standing watch beside him.
