House Merryweather of Longtable

Casa Merryweather de Granmesa

House Merryweather of Longtable is a noble house of the Reach, sworn to House Tyrell and seated at the castle of Longtable. Its sigil — a golden cornucopia spilling fruit and vegetables on a white field — is one of the most distinctive in the Reach, and its words, "Behold Our Bounty," speak of a wealth the family hasn't always been able to keep.

Its fortunes have long tracked royal favor: loyalty to the Iron Throne at key moments in the history of the Seven Kingdoms has brought the house both power and ruin, and today it holds less land and less influence than it once did.

Chapter 1

Loyalty to Maegor

Books only

In this chapterLord Merryweather

The elder Lord Merryweather, loyal to King Maegor I Targaryen, joined Lord Rowan and Lord Caswell at the head of Reach forces sent to stop the army of Prince Aegon, who was pressing his own claim to the Iron Throne. The clash came beneath the Gods Eye, where the Reach's troops fell on the enemy from the south.

That loyalty cost him: the Warrior's Sons, acting on the orders of Ser Joffrey Doggett, later had the elder Lord Merryweather killed for having stood by King Maegor to the end.

Chapter 2

The fall of Owen Merryweather

Books only

In this chapterAerys II Targaryen

Under the reign of Aerys II Targaryen, the house's fortunes collapsed. It had once been a wealthy family with real weight in the Reach, but the king stripped its lord, Owen Merryweather, of titles and holdings and sent him into exile, blaming him for his failures as Hand of the King.

Chapter 3

A return, half finished

Books only

When the Targaryens fell in Robert's Rebellion, the new king allowed Orton Merryweather — Owen's grandson and heir — to return to Westeros and restored his titles.

Much of the family's old lands never came back to them, though, and the treasury of Longtable stayed locked in the Crown's coffers. The house's standing in the Reach has never fully recovered.
