Ax Isle
la Isla del Hacha
Ax Isle is a small island in the Basilisk Isles, off the northern coast of Sothoryos, named for the cutting shape of its coastline.
Ruled by pirates and corsairs, it became feared by those crossing the Summer Sea southward, among them the ten-thousand-ship fleet carrying the Rhoynar people away from Valyria.
Chapter 1
An island shaped like an axe
Books only
The island takes its name from the shape of its coastline, cut like the blade of an axe. It lies among the Basilisk Isles off the northern coast of Sothoryos, with Skull Island to the west and, across the Summer Sea to the north, New Ghis.
Chapter 2
Ruins from the Dawn Age
Books only
Ruins remain on the island from a much older civilization, dating to the Dawn Age. Whether that people still lived there when the corsairs arrived, or was wiped out by them, is not known.
Two hundred years after the Doom of Valyria, the pirate Xandarro Xhore used the stones from those ruins to raise a black fortress, which still stands.
Chapter 3
The price Nymeria would not pay
Books only
Corsairs from Ax Isle attacked part of the ten thousand ships with which Nymeria was leading her people, taking many as slaves.
They then offered to let the Rhoynar settle on the Isle of Toads, in exchange for each king handing over thirty virgin girls and comely boys every year. Nymeria refused the bargain and sent her people back to sea, bound for Sothoryos.
What we are not sure about
PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
