Barrowton

Villa Túmulo

Barrowton is a city of the North, raised beside the Salt Spear river in the Barrowlands and overlooked by Barrow Hall, the seat of House Dustin.

Its streets have welcomed visiting Targaryen kings and, in times of war, the musters of northern lords deciding which side to serve.

Chapter 1

Wide streets under Barrow Hall

Barrowton is a city of wooden houses and wide, straight streets, laid out beneath Barrow Hall, the castle that crowns the town and seat of House Dustin.

Less than a thousand paces away stands Goldgrass, the settlement of its vassals, House Stout, and on the grassy slopes nearby the Great Barrow can be seen.

Chapter 2

The Conqueror's visits

King Aegon I Targaryen passed through Barrowton on two occasions, during the long royal progresses to which he devoted half of every year.

Chapter 3

Jaehaerys and Alysanne's progress

In this chapterJaehaerys I Targaryen

In 58 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne made Barrowton the last stop of their royal progress through the North. There, Lord Dustin showed them the barrow of the First King and held a tournament in their honor, modest next to what was usual in the south.

Queen Alysanne used the visit to hold one of her women's courts in the town.

Chapter 4

Men gather for the Blacks

At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, shortly after Prince Jacaerys Velaryon's journey through the North, Barrowton was one of the places where men began mustering to join the Blacks. Lord Roderick Dustin led the Winter Wolves on their march to the Riverlands.

Later, after Rhaenyra Targaryen's execution at her brother King Aegon II's order, word reached King's Landing that warriors were gathering in Winterfell, Barrowton and White Harbor. Soon after, Lord Cregan Stark marched south at the head of an army.

Chapter 5

The winter of the fever

In 134 AC, during a particularly harsh winter, winter fever reached Barrowton, the first time it struck an inland city. Lord Dustin was forced to shut the town's gates against the hundreds of starving smallfolk crowding beneath its walls.

Distant kin

According to semi-canonical sources, some distant kin of House Stark still live in Barrowton.

Chapter 7

The raven for Castle Black

Books only

Maester Aemon sent a raven to Barrowton asking for help to defend Castle Black from a wildling attack.

Chapter 8

The northern lords swear to Tommen

Books only

In this chapterRoose Bolton

After taking Moat Cailin, Lord Roose Bolton summoned the lords of the North to Barrowton to swear their allegiance to King Tommen Baratheon.

The town received the forces of House Bolton, Frey, Ryswell, Tallhart, Flint, Umber, Locke, Slate, Cerwyn, Stout and Hornwood, together with those of the Dustins themselves.
